So so tell me a bit of a bit of recording product process. I mean, I understand that you produced the album with Mark Cabin Iton. Um, are also works. Worked with Dave Root of Tesla on his soul. Well, lucky That was a killer release. So you worked with him on it? spk_1:   2:41 Yeah. Yeah, I got to hear a route that will really loud, you know, Um, but, uh, market the, um he's a musician himself in Fresno, and he is a full time turning, made a really interesting criminal law attorney. And, uh um, spk_0:   3:02 I got spk_1:   3:02 hooked up with him. I met him years ago. He's friends with the guys, and and I have a friend in the cabin. Um, I hooked up with Mark, and, uh, you know, we're both limited on time. So that's why the album called What? Weekends? Because that's about what it took. And it wasn't consecutive either. It was a long drive from my House president two and 1/2 to 3 hours when I went out there, and, um, we just didn't know until we stopped. And basically, I mean, I could have paid a lot of stuff and fix things, but it was so difficult. Thio communicate with them, Really? They have any changes? Does, you know, big stain. Um, but it was it was easy is a good guy. I was just doing a studio, and we have a good time and, uh, you get it right now. spk_0:   3:57 That's fantastic. No. Now, going into the recording in the production process was ever a plan in place of what you felt. The album should sound like I mean to me, I find the elm has an earthy cosmic five. Hence, why I feel there are similar is that he's freely to, like aces. First solo, and I kind of got that from spk_1:   4:18 Well, that's cool. Well, you know, it's not a big budget recording. So, um what? I wanted todo um you know, I kind of I kind of wanted down kind of, um older, like am radio. Anything like it played in mono was so good. Do spk_0:   4:34 you spk_1:   4:36 kind of like a compressed down? Um, I had my idea of what I wanted to hear, but, you know, I really had a lot to do, so I kind of left everything tomorrow. Um, because, you know, I didn't play bass and a little bit of keys and, uh, working out the background vocals and all that is really the guitar was kind of lead. Guitar was laughed, but I had a lot to think about. What kind of left out to him. Um, you don't put it together and make this out. spk_0:   5:12 You know, spk_1:   5:12 I could go with with an intent on what I wanted to sound like one of the queen and sweet, you know these things. But, you know, he doesn't know what happened. spk_0:   5:21 No. And I think I mean, I hear some of that in there to, um I don't know. I think I think more or less my impression in the East really thing was because I always thought aces vocal has its own identity because no one sings like And I thought when I heard your vocal on it that there was so much identity there, that that's why I made that comparison as well. There. It was kind of that, um I don't know if it was this space. It's not really the space feel But Ace just had that way on that 17 album of trading that vibe. spk_1:   5:56 Uh, that's great. spk_0:   5:59 Yeah, I go. I do, too. And that's that's probably why I loved something. Well, I love the album. So my, um so rich Carlson played drums on the album. I didn't know until you told me yesterday, um, that he had played with Paul Sortino and bad boys. I actually own not CD. Um, yeah. And he had written a book called Twisted Drums. Troy. Look, had I not done a forward on it once is cool. Um, yeah. And I understand you guys go all the way back to high school. spk_1:   6:35 Yeah. Maniacal together. In fact, the first man that was in high school with Ridge and actually the original guitar player, John Mathews and bad one. I went to high school with him, too. I was in a band with him and rich, and it was a great man. Those guys. I went to a new high school from a different area and they took me in and we had the best time playing house parties. You guys must've been a pretty good band that, I mean, with the players that were in that band even back then. spk_1:   7:20 Uh, yeah. You know, my high school was a rock'n'roll high school. You know, Rick's brother, Kevin Carlson. Great guy, no longer with us. God bless them. But he played with all the Nova uncle when all this broke because you're feeling Canadian, right? spk_0:   7:36 Yeah. spk_1:   7:37 Um, man, I remember those days. That was great, you know, because we had a real rock star in our neighborhood. spk_0:   7:46 That's cool. spk_1:   7:46 And he's a great guy, a great player. Um, and then also, there's a drummer. I don't Have you ever heard of, um, Romeo void? Uh, go, uh, he A's. They had a song. Never say never. It was a pretty good hit alternative. And with a drummer, he went to the school well, and our school and then the drummer battle on Jamie. And we just pulled him, um, playing missing a few people. You know, from yesterday today they were very things and hard rock in the area, you know? And then you have thrash big, brash, bright. And there's just a lot of music, period, Um, a lot of venues to play for the seabed. And, um, yeah, it was great. Now I was playing in place in service is gonna call the older, and I would open for one and be in wine and cheese. Crowd was like the Raider crowd, man, they were traded throw stuff at a lettuce as we would you choose that tonight? There's the dinner that I won. The letter would come out. spk_0:   9:27 That's unbelievable. Oh, man. And I mean, you mentioned the Raiders proudly. I just have to imagine like how our people have wondered how people were taking the fact that they're moving again. Like that's just that's to me. That's crazy to take the readers that, spk_1:   9:43 you know. I don't know. It almost seems like it. If there was enough for one day, but I'm working it. Um, I remember from when I was little. I remember meeting some of the Raiders in the neighborhood. You assume that lives by me. And, uh, that's old school football. You know, those guys didn't make very much money, and they were all so hurt, you know, under thirties Ford. Yeah, but spk_0:   10:08 this is all coming out now. Kind of thing whole enough. Um, So what I find intriguing about the album getting back to that is it's your thought process in terms of the lyrics. For instance, asset Flame, your synopsis in a previous statement was the inspiration of a set aflame came from the memories of trying to sleep when I had a fever or the flu. It sucks. So about in the nightmare is never ending. Um, I think that's that's kind of impressive. You're pushing the envelope lyrically. I mean, what can you say about some of the other lyrics? Were possibly your, um you went a little bit different than the North. spk_1:   11:20 Well, I wanted, you know, being that I had never written, really written we're not not full long Anyway, we're saying, um, I didn't want to do the you know, Friday night No. One party or the, um, you know the love thing to my do a lot. You know, I love the turtles from the band, the turtle. You know, there's there's a few bands that were talking like that. So I just thought a little stories in my head, and that's what lyric came from this story. You know, just like little move many movies and like in my brain and, ah, you know, having flu dreams, something that almost everyone has. spk_0:   12:04 Yeah, spk_1:   12:04 uh, could be a hangover drink jail. spk_0:   12:06 I had those before, spk_1:   12:12 but, um, yeah, lyrically, you know, I'm kind of a punter. Do. So it's kind of fun to come up with lines like that. And I didn't spend a lot of time doing it, which was really nice. It wasn't a real struggle for May. I just, uh I just kind of did it, you know, even the demos. I just thought of the ideas and came up with a song recorded him then, um and that was that. Then I'm going in the next one. spk_0:   12:38 That's fantastic. Um, I I would assume you're still in contact with about long guys. Um, have they heard the album? spk_1:   12:47 Yeah. Uh, Jamie, I went to Nam, and I thought Jamie there the drummer. spk_0:   12:53 Yeah, spk_1:   12:54 it. Yeah. You heard it. Um, you may be the only one. Okay. I think there may have heard a couple long I heard from Rob since that big that you mentioned. Um, yeah, and it was right, but, um, yeah, he moved. He lived in Southern California. spk_0:   13:15 Yeah, because he retired, right? I believe. spk_1:   13:19 I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. what happened with spk_0:   13:23 E? Yeah, but I believe that he came in and said he had retired on Facebook. Wow. And he was moving. It was moving on, And I actually haven't seen him on Facebook in quite a long time. So spk_1:   13:41 yeah, I haven't either. He was on to something else, you know? But I play with Rob and Derek. For years. It was in a cover band. We travel, we had a great, you know, the funny thing is, there he didn't He wasn't even in the hard rock back. That spk_0:   14:02 really spk_1:   14:02 we would have to fight. The plates were being songs. You know, this is like the real early eighties. He, uh I guess he he was in a in a rock band, and then he, uh he changed the style like stray cats. Remember him? Load the street? Yeah. We would have really try and get him to do some odd hard rock. spk_0:   14:25 That's interesting, considering I mean, on the first album, the songs that were written on that first elf Omar leg, you know, in your face and kind of, you spk_1:   14:35 know, years later, you like a lot of different styles. So that's good. spk_0:   14:41 Yeah, Oh, no. And I was fine. I mean, he's doing that the, um, the blues thing he's doing down. I got an advance of that all morning. Came in. It was fantastic. It was really good. spk_1:   14:51 Yeah. Yeah. Great. Is that, spk_0:   14:53 um So when When you left bobble on 80. Was this where you were going towards was to do this old? Well, spk_1:   15:06 Yeah. I had wanted been wanting to do it for a while, and, um, they wanted to go a different direction than me. That was one of the, you know, to go back. You know, John Matthews is really the Ogi original guy from when they were persuaders. And then they were babble on. And what happened was John Master Band when they were recording. So I was in a band already, and we were working on a deal with Simmons record. Oh, yeah. I love the band that I was. And, uh, but when the Madeira call me and then the management called me, I thought, Well, I'd better just kind of go for the sure thing, you know? So so then I moved down the aisle in Hollywood and I recorded the album and going from there. And then the van changed the name of Babylon A d Getting away on the final battle on 80 spk_0:   16:09 kids, right? Yeah, because it was so liver sweaters. Or he went John, that's funny. spk_1:   16:14 Yeah. Yeah. Later. Anyway. So, um, those guys wanted to go the direction in which I felt was backward, going full persuaders. I wanted what happened When I heard that rat record you got called. I really loved it. spk_0:   16:29 Which it will be the last one, spk_1:   16:33 Uh, the last one call spk_0:   16:35 infestation, I believe. spk_1:   16:37 Yeah, I think that's the one. Yeah, um, I really liked it. Like the way it sounded spk_0:   16:42 me 10. spk_1:   16:43 A big fun, Great in the plains. Great. And that's what I wanted to do. If we're going to do something new, I want to go away and have 1/3 party producer that's not connected to the song and pick two plays. What? And you know, kind of go the way the traditional way, it hard. I don't want to go back where you want to go forward. And that was my my opinion. I mean, but then was going fine, But that was their history of the persuaders and that wasn't my thing. So, you know, gracefully bowed out, spk_0:   17:21 right? Most disappointed. And he left actually. Well, I was I was because, I mean, I've got to meet you guys in Pekin. And I was I was told I had never seen Bobble on 80 and I didn't think I would ever get the chance to see them. So seeing you guys play live was just It is one of the highlights of that weekend for me. So, um, well and and I love your playing as I told you that night. So when you left, I go, Well, that's anyways, it is what it is, and I totally get it. spk_1:   17:57 Yeah. Yeah. That was a good show to remember. Yeah, the last guy did. spk_0:   18:02 It was but that was a really good show. I had a great time. Remember, Black and Blue? I think they came on before you guys and they were really left really loud. It was like, Oh, my God. But spk_1:   18:19 what am I favorite bands from back in the day? I really liked spk_0:   18:24 me too. I really enjoyed them. I would really like him too. I saw them at any three last year, too. and they were fantastic. So I've always been black and blue fan. There's just They were really loud. I don't know what it was. It was like the one guitar and was really loud. I think that could have been what it wa ce. But then you guys came on in it. It was all good. Um, no, I'm curious about your influence. Is growing up? I mean, in connection with the album? Would you say a lot of your influences came out in your song writing on this? spk_1:   18:58 Yeah, Yeah, um, the turtle grass root level that the beetle line the family stone. Um I love Earth, wind and fire all those things. And, you know, when I think of that, the group of songs, the album, just, you know, part of it, I'm a dental for what is wrong that we have another album written. And so the whole group of song has all those influences, I think, but I really I really like cheap trick. And I'm like, don't tell Tyler. I think I know probably some of that influence as well. spk_0:   19:37 Yeah. Here. You know what? I didn't think of a stone temple pilots until you until you mentioned it. Maybe like minutes. Still untenable. Pilots more. Maybe the second and third album. Because the 1st 1 is kind of different from the other stuff. Yeah, spk_1:   19:51 yeah, spk_0:   19:54 yeah. It wasn't. And then they kind of progressed. spk_1:   20:04 Didn't capture the beauty of Scott Weiland, Melody and boys. Frank is a favorite melody maker. That was incredible. spk_0:   20:16 Yes, I never I never got to see him. I never got to see him with SCP or Velvet Revolver and actually played in a STP tribute band for a little bit. Yeah, that was That was kind of interesting. Someone asked me if I would do it, and I said, Sure, I'll take a stop about it, but didn't end up working out because their drummer quit. I was going into Toronto when I lived an hour away. So going into the city was just, you know, it just wasn't feasible for me at the time, But But it was fun to play the material. Right now, some guys were playing a lot of fun. spk_0:   20:58 Yeah, And you don't you don't realize how many songs there are that were, you know, they were on the radio until you start going through the catalog, right? spk_1:   21:09 Yeah, The delay. I understand that used to play with Robert Fucile from Skid Row at one time to before they started, which was it's just kind of, spk_1:   21:44 you know, spk_0:   21:45 Yeah, it's just kind of curious to wonder if there's any material like they're of them playing with him. Maybe they were. Is that what it's? Don't STP was originally called. Yeah, that's cool. I learned something so changing the subject a little bit. We're talking about your influences. Um, that was only a few years after I saw him the first time in the old control of him, and it blew me away. The show. Yeah, the out of the band after that big time and then, you know, here in the live album so many times it was great. And you don't know anyone they looked like at the time. It was the rule surprise. Pretty blonde. I don't know about that. Um, I think Jean was probably the most talkative and, uh, that was allowed to, man, That s sorry. Our studios in Hollywood, in a bother me up with the marshal, he turned up so loud and pointed it toward them. Yeah, but And the rest is history. And, uh, I'm man grated Be out there, writer for, um, there's no reason why we can't do it ourselves. I wrote that. spk_0:   27:33 Yeah, I was actually looking at nothing sacred today and seeing your song writing Christ on there. And you Yuko over with Derek. Quite a few of the songs on there. And I mean, I love both. I love both the albums. I just I find that that albums is different from the debut. Obviously because the song writing's in a different from different people. Um, yeah. I find that one's got a little bit more death, and it's got its a little. There's a blue zero feel which I think I from knowing you're playing. Remember the first time I heard that song? And I thought Holy cow about is that is an amazing song. No. Cool. Yeah, very well. Um, I loved dirty. I don't know if you're familiar with the journey out before Steve Perry joined. There's a lot of jamming. spk_0:   28:53 Yeah, I knew that. I haven't heard them. Um, spk_1:   28:56 yeah, I was like, you know, working. You do? Yeah. Breaking heart. Um, I loved all that. And, uh, now we love blues anyway. I mean, it's not traditional blues, necessarily, but more rock rock blue. Right. Um, get after attacking from. But I really loved when they played. I love it to be parked down the left and right. And I love I love Sly in rocket are, um I just I like that. Feel what? I'm listening, right? I've always been a fan, like, I mean, going back to like Cinderella, For instance, when they came in love, Tom Keefer did. And what he brought to the table with uses, you know, like, brought that blues element in Iraq. And I just always I've always liked those kind of bands. spk_1:   30:01 Yes, and the roll is great. I mean, I've seen Cinderella a few times, but I've never seen his solo banded. They don't They don't come up here much. I mean, I I wanted to go in this one because I really wanted to see cold sweat because they hadn't played, you know, with Marc Ferrari. And they hadn't played in, like, 30 years together. He told me he actually used to follow Pat Travis Travers around when he was, like, 15 years old. He loved, um, not much strain. You show up wherever Pa Travers wanted, Pat Travers got to know who he was. And I guess now he still remember.
